"I live my life in shadows cast by sparks of light...any moment, the whole thing could blow up"

I've been listening to a lot of Freddie Stevenson recently (that line is from one of my favourite songs of his).  His lyrics are amazingly poetic and heartfelt, and since all this chaos has erupted in my life I've been listening to song lyrics a lot more closely than usual.  In some ways listening to music always makes me feel better because it grounds me; no matter where I end up living or where I end up working or however rubbish everything gets, I'll always have my favourite songs to listen to, and my favourite books to read, and my favourite people to talk to (doesn't that sound like the tritest thing you've ever heard?!  It's probably the tritest thing I've ever written, but it's also true).

I used to listen to some music so I could wallow in its sentiments; it's an indulgence of some strange kind when everything in life is going fairly well.  But when it isn't, you can't wallow.  Well, I can't anyway.  Instead I just want to get on and do stuff.  In a way it's a shame I'm only properly galvanised when things are falling around my ears!

In another admission of triteness, reading about the Second World War is helping me at the moment too.  Something about handling crises with stiff upper lips and general grit and bravery is quite inspiring, although I obviously haven't been bombed out of my house, been starved half to death and lost someone I care about in battle.  But the sentiment is the same (!)  I'm also re-reading 'A Little Princess' too.  Stories about people losing things and then finding something better in the end are really quite good to read, and if you work at it hard enough then I'm convinced it happens in real life, too.
