Reacting to the dentist's drill - a year of annoying metaphors

I quite like Russell Brand.  Or at least, I find the paradox of his juvenile sense of humour and extreme articulacy interesting, especially for someone who comes from Essex (over Christmas there was a temporary shop in the High Street outside which there was a professionally printed sign claiming "Lot's of Grate Bargin's!"  That's what you're usually dealing with round 'ere, folks).

Because I quite like Russell Brand I broke with my usual "no celebrity autobiographies" rule a few years ago and read 'My Booky Wook', which was littered with refreshing emotional honesty and there was actually an interesting story to tell as well...which always helps, I find, when you're reading a book.

But anyway.  I saw one of his stand-up shows, in which he talked about the main problem involved in going on holiday to "get away from it all"...it's because YOU'RE there, spoiling it.

I remember that whenever I think life's getting too much and I need some time "off"...because you don't ever really get that, do you?  You'll still have to see your own face in the mirror every morning; it's just that the mirror might be a bit nicer than the one you've got at home, with a pretty bevelled edge that simply reminds you that you're not bevel-edged yourself and it's all a bit depressing, really.

So there's no point in going away; you're best off sticking around and sorting things out, which is what I think I'll be spending most of 2012 doing.  For some reason I've got a strong feeling this is going to be a year of changes, though I'm not quite sure what they'll be yet.  Life can kick you in the teeth sometimes, or maybe it's you doing it yourself and blaming it on "life"; but it's important to remember that it can also give you bright 'n' shiny veneers.  It all depends on how you react to the dentist's drill.

(Maybe my biggest change will be in my more frequent use of vague and slightly annoying metaphors.  Who can tell?)
